Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international soccer following Argentina’s loss to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final on July 19. The 39-year-old forward concludes a 21-year career with 207 appearances, 125 goals, and 68 international assists. While Messi secured a World Cup title in 2022 and two Copa América trophies, he remained unable to score a competitive senior international goal against Brazil, Germany, Italy, Spain, or England. Messi confirmed his departure from the national team in a statement written on July 21, noting that his decision was finalized following the July 19 match and the death of his father, Jorge Messi, on August 8. He will continue to play for his club, Inter Miami.
