The Los Angeles Chargers waived quarterback DJ Uiagalelei on Sunday as the team reduced its roster to 53 players. Uiagalelei, an undrafted free agent who spent his rookie season on the team's practice squad, competed throughout the summer for the backup position behind Justin Herbert. The job was ultimately awarded to veteran Trey Lance. During the preseason, Uiagalelei completed 24 of 42 passes for 341 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. The former Clemson and Florida State quarterback is now subject to the NFL waiver process. If he clears waivers unclaimed, the Chargers have expressed interest in signing him to the practice squad for the upcoming season.
