New York Islanders prospect Malte Gustafsson recorded his first goal during preseason action for HV71 in the Swedish Hockey League. The 18-year-old forward, selected 13th overall in the 2026 NHL Draft, demonstrated his offensive skill with a goal assisted by Victor Laz. Gustafsson will remain in Sweden to continue his development rather than participating in the upcoming New York Islanders rookie or training camps. This approach mirrors the path taken by Victor Eklund, who played in Sweden following his own selection in the 2025 NHL Draft before eventually debuting for the Islanders at the end of the Bridgeport season. The organization intends for Gustafsson to follow a similar development timeline as he gains experience in the SHL. The Islanders begin their own season in 24 days.
