Manchester United fails to sign Manchester City defender Rayan Ait-Nouri

Manchester United contacted cross-town rival Manchester City on transfer deadline day to inquire about the availability of defender Rayan Ait-Nouri. The approach followed unsuccessful attempts by United to recruit Newcastle United's Lewis Hall and Barcelona's Alejandro Balde to address the team's lack of depth at the left-back position. While United preferred a direct transfer, Manchester City required a loan deal involving an obligation to buy, which ended negotiations. Ait-Nouri joined City last summer for 36 million pounds and has made 31 appearances for the club, though he currently serves as a reserve behind Josko Gvardiol. Luke Shaw remains the only recognized senior left-back currently available to Michael Carrick's squad.
