Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle sell remaining Pittsburgh Penguins ownership shares

Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle have sold their remaining minority interest in the Pittsburgh Penguins, concluding a tenure that began when the duo purchased the franchise out of bankruptcy in 1999. This transaction marks the first time since 1984 that Lemieux, a former player and long-time executive, holds no formal affiliation with the organization. While the Penguins were acquired by Fenway Sports Group in 2021 and subsequently sold to the Hoffmann Family of Companies this summer, the minority partners had maintained a stake through both ownership changes. Despite the divestment, team governor Geoff Hoffmann has expressed interest in maintaining a relationship with the franchise icon in a capacity yet to be determined. Neither Lemieux nor the ownership group has provided official comment regarding the sale. The move follows the recent transition of the franchise to its current ownership structure.
