Maryland football allows Dontay Joyner to rejoin the team roster

Maryland senior defensive back Dontay Joyner has rejoined the football team after previously parting ways with the program this summer. Coach Michael Locksley stated the decision followed a request from senior team leaders who advocated for Joyner’s return. Joyner was arrested in June and later pleaded guilty to telephone misuse regarding a harassment case involving his former girlfriend. The player currently remains enrolled in classes and is practicing, though he is barred from game participation until further notice. Locksley noted the move was supported by athletic director Jim Smith and other university officials. Joyner, who earned honorable mention All-Big Ten recognition last season, previously spent 27 days in jail and was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation and abuse intervention program.
