Mater Dei rallies to secure 10-9 victory over Corona Centennial

Mater Dei improved to 4-0 on the season following a 10-9 comeback victory against Corona Centennial on Friday at Santa Ana Stadium. Junior quarterback Russell Sekona tied the game with a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, followed by a point-after kick from Jerry Shifman that provided the margin of victory. The Monarchs managed the win despite 22 accepted penalties and a sluggish offensive performance that saw the team convert only two of 10 third-down attempts. Freshman quarterback Paytyn Guess led the team’s final drive to secure the result after Corona Centennial missed a late field goal attempt. Centennial, which dropped to 1-2, initially built a 9-0 lead behind a jet sweep touchdown from Kennie Leggett before its offensive production faltered against the Monarchs' defense.
