Dermody, who pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs, and Boston Red Sox, informed The Des Moines Register of his decision on August 14, 2026. Over his career, he appeared in 31 games, achieving a 2-1 record and a 5.74 ERA with 23 strikeouts. His best season came in 2017 with the Blue Jays, where he posted a 4.43 ERA in 23 appearances. Prior to his retirement, Dermody pitched in the Mexican League during the 2025 season and spent the 2022 season with the Iowa Cubs.
