Max Scherzer matches Nolan Ryan with 10-strikeout game for Blue Jays

Blue Jays right-hander Max Scherzer delivered 7.0 shutout innings against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday. The performance included 10 strikeouts while allowing only one hit and one walk. At 42 years and 34 days old, Scherzer became the only pitcher other than Nolan Ryan to record a game with at least 10 strikeouts and one or fewer hits allowed at age 42 or older. Ryan achieved the feat six times, most recently in 1991 at age 44. Scherzer’s outing provided a lift for the Blue Jays as they remain 1.5 games out of a postseason spot. Despite this recent effort, Scherzer holds a 6.16 ERA and a 2-7 record across 13 starts this season.
