The New York Mets have claimed catcher Shawn Ross off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates. In conjunction with this move, the Mets designated right-handed pitcher Joey Gerber for assignment to create space on their 40-man roster. Ross, 26, has primarily played in the minors this season, hitting.181 with 10 home runs across Double-A and Triple-A. He made his MLB debut on July 25 and homered in his second game. Gerber has struggled this season, posting a 7.81 ERA in the minors but has been better in the majors with a 4.32 ERA.
