Miles Russell and Tyler Mawhinney post strong rounds at U.S. Junior Amateur

Miles Russell of Jacksonville Beach and Tyler Mawhinney of Fleming Island had notable performances in the first round of the U.S. Junior Amateur at Saucon Valley Grace Course on July 20. Russell, the top-ranked junior player, finished at 1-under 69, tying for 11th place, while Mawhinney shot an even-par 70, placing him in a tie for 19th. Sohan Patel leads the tournament after a 5-under 66 at the Old Course. The top 64 players after the second round will qualify for match play starting July 22. Several other local players struggled, with Charlie Woods and defending champion Hamilton Coleman both tied for 122nd with scores of 76.
