Minnesota Twins defeat Detroit Tigers in final game before September 11

On September 10, 2001, the Minnesota Twins played the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park in what proved to be the final Major League Baseball game before the events of September 11. Minnesota secured a 3-2 victory after trailing in the middle innings. Corey Koskie and David Ortiz combined for an early run, and Torii Hunter hit a go-ahead triple in the ninth inning that allowed Matthew LeCroy to score on a sacrifice fly. Joe Mays pitched eight innings for the Twins, allowing one earned run and striking out five. Eddie Guardado closed the game in the ninth by retiring the side. This contest marked the last time the Twins took the field until league play resumed on September 18.
