Minnesota Vikings list J.J. McCarthy as primary backup on roster announcement

The Minnesota Vikings released their 53-man roster on August 31, 2026, positioning J.J. McCarthy behind Kyler Murray on the team's depth chart. While the team noted that starters on the list correspond with the most recent unofficial depth chart, the document also serves as an indicator of the current quarterback hierarchy. This placement follows internal team speculation regarding the backup role, which previously included Carson Wentz and Max Brosmer as potential candidates. The roster serves as a snapshot of the squad heading into the season opener. The Minnesota Vikings are scheduled to face the Green Bay Packers on September 13, 2026, at U.S. Bank Stadium to begin their campaign.
