Minnesota Vikings release Johnny Hekker and name Brett Thorson starting punter

The Minnesota Vikings are releasing four-time First-Team All-Pro punter Johnny Hekker as part of their final roster cutdowns. The decision secures the starting job for undrafted rookie Brett Thorson, who joined the team after winning the Ray Guy Award at Georgia in 2025. Thorson also takes over duties as the primary holder for kicker Will Reichard. While the move represents a shift to a younger, more cost-effective option, the organization maintains high expectations for the rookie. General manager Nolan Teasley, who took his position on May 30, oversaw the roster selection process. The team previously lost veteran Ryan Wright in free agency before acquiring Hekker on a one-year, $1.48 million contract earlier this year.
