MJ Melendez cut by Mets after struggling start to season

MJ Melendez has been designated for assignment by the New York Mets on August 2, after posting a.192 batting average in 56 games this season. Signed to a one-year, $1.5 million contract in February, Melendez had been unable to find consistent success at the plate, contributing to the Mets' last-place status in the National League East. In a message on Twitter/X, he expressed gratitude to the organization and teammates, wishing them the best moving forward. The Mets have been active in the lead-up to the trade deadline, with several players traded or designated for reassessment as the team evaluates its roster for the remainder of the season.
