MJF's Forbidden Door opponent uncertain ahead of June 28 event

The final segments of AEW’s Summer Blockbuster edition of Dynamite tonight (June 10) gave us a few big pieces of the picture for the company’s Forbidden Door PPV with New Japan, CMLL and Stardom on Sun., June 28. First, we got a video from NJPW’s Zack Sabre, Jr. The two-time IWGP World Heavyweight champ from England is a Forbidden Door staple, having appeared on all four previous iterations of the event — including a defense of New Japan’s top belt against his countryman Nigel McGuinness last year. In 2026, he wants to have his first one-on-one match with Kenny bai-Gawd Omega in almost eight years (since B Block of the 2018 G1 Climax). .@zacksabrejr is BACK for Forbidden Door! AEW’s Forbidden Door PPV is approaching at the end of the month. The big question is who will be MJF’s opponent in the main event. Based on the storyline direction, the options seem to be Mark Briscoe, Andrade El Idolo, or Kevin Knight. Maybe it’s all of the above for a four-way bout. Not to mention MJF’s opponent could be coming from NJPW, since that was the original concept for Forbidden Door. I don’t know the scene in NJPW to suggest potential challengers, but I can go over the possibilities from AEW. MJF had a heated feud against Briscoe last year. MJF won round one. Briscoe evened the score in a Tables ‘n’ Tacks match. Briscoe is trying to talk his way into the rubber match, however, MJF views Dat Boy as not worthy in star power for a world title shot. Who do you want to be MJF’s opponent at Forbidden Door? My pick is Andrade. That is a fresh matchup, and his fan appeal is very hot right now. As for the current card for Forbidden Door, there’s not much to report at the moment. Only two matches are official, and we only know one quarter of the participants at this moment. Owen Hart Cup men’s final: Will Ospreay vs. TBD Owen Hart Cup women’s final: TBD vs. TBD Will Ospreay will face the winner between Swerve Strickland and Brody King. On the women’s side, Mercedes Moné wrestles Hazuki (from Stardom) in the semifinals. Athena will meet the winner of Skye Blue versus Sareee. Other directions are Thekla calling out for a challenger from Stardom to defend the AEW Women’s World Championship, Konosuke Takeshita getting revenge on Kyle Fletcher with the AEW International Championship on the line, and Adam Copeland & Christian Cage possibly defending the AEW World Tag Team Championship against the Dogs or the Young Bucks. That leaves continental champion Jon Moxley, national champion Mark Davis, women’s tag champs Divine Dominion, and world trios champions The Conglomeration open for challengers from NJPW, CMLL, or Stardom to make good on the Forbidden Door vibe. Before Maxwell Jacob Friedman took time off from AEW last year, one of the wrestlers he put over was Mark Briscoe. That win in All Out’s Tables and Tacks match should earn Briscoe a shot at MJF now that he’s on his third AEW World title run, right?
