MLS announces all 27 clubs will compete in 2027 U.S. Open Cup

Major League Soccer confirmed on September 2 that all 27 of its United States-based clubs will participate in the 2027 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. This expansion returns every MLS side to the tournament after years of limited participation. Nashville SC, which won the 2025 competition, missed the tournament during recent seasons due to the league's shift in focus to the Leagues Cup. Nashville SC player Hany Mukhtar stated his excitement for the return to the historic domestic competition, citing the high stakes of the win-or-go-home format. Clubs will enter the 112th edition of the tournament in the Round of 64 starting in July 2027. The competition will feature a 96-team field, allowing amateur and professional teams across the country to compete for the trophy.
