MLS plans to overhaul playoff format to enhance competitiveness

Major League Soccer is reportedly considering a significant change to its playoff structure as it prepares for a new schedule starting in 2027. The proposed format aims to boost viewership and fan engagement by aligning the postseason with the less competitive sports during the summer months. Key changes include a combination of teams from five divisions into a single table, allowing the top 20 teams to advance. The playoffs would consist of a double-elimination round for the top eight teams and a play-in round for those ranked ninth through twentieth. MLS has consulted with the Australian Football League regarding the potential new format.
