Monett defeats Joplin in penalty shootout after late comeback

Monett rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat Joplin in a penalty shootout on Tuesday. Joplin held a 2-0 lead for much of the match behind two goals from Abdias Orozco-Rodriguez and steady goalkeeping from Gage Stovern. Monett reduced the gap with a David Perez free kick goal with approximately 10 minutes remaining in regulation. Donavic Salas then forced extra time by scoring an equalizer in the final seconds of the second half. Following a scoreless overtime period, Monett goalkeeper Alex Patino made a critical save during the penalty shootout. Patino subsequently scored the deciding goal for his team to secure the victory. Both teams are scheduled to compete next in the Viking Showdown event on September 10.
