Muggsy Bogues set the precedent as the first Charlotte Hornets number one

Muggsy Bogues served as the first player in franchise history to wear the No. 1 jersey for the Charlotte Hornets. Selected with the sixth pick in the 1988 expansion draft, the 5'3" point guard spent 10 consecutive seasons with the team. Bogues appeared in 632 games for the organization, recording averages of 8.8 points, 8.8 assists, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.7 steals per contest. His tenure in Charlotte concluded when he was traded to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for B.J. Armstrong. Following his time with the Hornets and Warriors, Bogues played two seasons with the Toronto Raptors before retiring after the 2000-01 campaign. He continues to maintain a connection with the organization through his ongoing involvement in the Charlotte community.
