Nassau County investigates racist behavior at Fernandina Beach High School volleyball match

Nassau County School District officials have launched an investigation into reports of racist slurs and offensive gestures during a September 10 girls volleyball match. The game between host Fernandina Beach High School and visiting Andrew Jackson High School included a pause in play late in the second set after players addressed the referee regarding crowd behavior. Video footage shows a match administrator speaking to the student section following the report, though audio remains unclear. The Jacksonville branch of the NAACP condemned the incident, calling the reported conduct racist and abhorrent. While Fernandina Beach won the match in three sets, the district is now coordinating with Duval County Public Schools to review the events. The Florida High School Athletic Association may also review the matter, as its bylaws permit the exclusion of individuals who direct racial slurs toward opponents or officials.
