Nebraska uses defensive linemen as blockers to convert critical fourth down

Nebraska incorporated defensive linemen Jahsear Whittington and Anthony Jones into an offensive formation during a 4th-and-1 attempt in the third quarter of their game against Ohio on September 5. The play occurred at the Ohio 37-yard line with Nebraska leading 14-13. Whittington and Jones served as lead blockers for running back Jamal Rule, creating a lane that allowed Rule to gain 10 yards and a first down. Nebraska outscored Ohio 35-7 during the final 23 minutes of the game following this conversion. Offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen noted the personnel package was developed during camp after identifying the physical capabilities of both defensive players. The team intends to continue using this short-yardage formation in future games.
