New England Patriots add safety Jaylen Reed in trade with Houston Texans

The New England Patriots acquired safety Jaylen Reed from the Houston Texans in a late August trade. The deal sent wide receiver Kayshon Boutte to Houston along with a 2028 seventh-round draft choice in exchange for the second-year defensive back. Reed entered the NFL as a sixth-round pick in 2025 out of Penn State and spent his rookie season with the Texans. After battling a knee injury during his first training camp, he played in nine games during his debut campaign, totaling 18 tackles and one fumble recovery. The Patriots will now integrate the 23-year-old safety into a defensive unit that features him as a positionally flexible player capable of contributing in zone coverage and on special teams. He previously started 29 games over his final two seasons at Penn State before entering the professional ranks.
