NFL teams finalize practice squad rules and player eligibility details

As NFL teams approach the roster deadline on August 30, 2026, they will trim down to 53 players and finalize practice squad signings. Each team can have a practice squad of up to 17 players. Recent changes allow teams increased flexibility, including the elevation of practice squad players to game day rosters without cutting other players. Additionally, veteran player eligibility has expanded, allowing teams to retain up to 6 veterans regardless of the number of accrued seasons. The next phase begins on August 31, 2026, when teams can start signing players to practice squads following roster cuts.
