The NHL is exploring an expansion to Austin, Texas, which could be its 33rd team. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced that the league will assess the feasibility of a team in Austin or Houston over the next six months. The Friedkin family has entered into an agreement with the NHL to investigate this nearly $3.5 billion investment. Currently, the only NHL team in Texas is the Dallas Stars. If successful, a new team would need a new arena, enhancing the sports in both cities.
