Nick Wayne was pinned by MJF during a three-way match on AEW Dynamite, affecting his momentum ahead of the ROH Men's World Championship match against Bandido at Death Before Dishonor on August 21. The match featured Wayne, MJF, and Speedball Mike Bailey, with MJF securing the win. Dave Meltzer noted that Wayne's loss may seem contradictory, as he is the No. 1 contender for the ROH title, while MJF did not want to defeat Bailey, who is ranked higher. Bandido has a history of losses outside ROH, indicating a less protective booking for ROH champions under Tony Khan.
