Niemann receives two-stroke penalty for club toss at U.S. Open

Joaquin Niemann enjoyed a superb ending to his roller-coaster week at the US Open, having been involved in controversy earlier in the tournament. Niemann fell victim to the new code of conduct introduced for major championships, when he threw his club in frustration during the opening round.

The USGA has been told that it has strayed into dangerous territory by penalising Joaquin Niemann for throwing a club during the first round of the US Open. Niemann deserves enormous credit for making the cut at the third major of the year.

The additional two shots gave Niemann an 11 on the par-4 sixth round, a disastrous hole that began with two lost balls from tee shots that went well to the right in deep grass. The USGA cited Rule 1.2b on “Code of Conduct.” While the rule has always been in place, the USGA and all the other golf organizations have met in recent years to develop consistent guidelines for a conduct policy, applied separately by each of the organizations at their tournaments.
