No. 23 Houston defeats Oregon State 33-20 in season opener

No. 23 Houston began its 2026 season with a 33-20 victory over Oregon State at TDECU Stadium on Saturday. Quarterback Conner Weigman threw for 305 yards and accounted for two touchdowns, one passing and one rushing, to lead the Cougars. Running backs Re'Shaun Sanford II and Makhi Hughes both added touchdown runs to help build a substantial lead. Oregon State mounted a second-half comeback attempt with scores from Jess Legree and A.J. Newberry, but the Cougars eventually pulled away. The game experienced two disruptions, including a 30-minute weather delay at halftime and a brief pause after a fan entered the field. Houston successfully defended its home turf to secure its fifth season-opening win in the last seven years.
