Northwest Guilford Middle School football player Caden Sorrell dies after cardiac arrest

Caden Sorrell, an eighth-grade student and football player at Northwest Guilford Middle School in Greensboro, North Carolina, has died. The 13-year-old went into cardiac arrest while running a lap during practice last Friday. Medical staff at Cone Health Hospital provided intensive treatment, including a heart pump and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, but the teen died on Sunday. While no underlying cause of the cardiac event has been officially confirmed, doctors have suggested a potential genetic condition may have played a role. The family is now pursuing genetic testing for his four siblings. A memorial has been placed at the school, and a vigil is scheduled for Wednesday evening.
