Original This Is Anfield stadium sign sells for 115,000 pounds at auction

An original tunnel sign from Liverpool's Anfield stadium sold for £115,000 at auction on September 9, 2026. The final price reached nearly eight times its initial estimate of £15,000. Manager Bill Shankly commissioned the sign in 1972, intending it to serve as a psychological tool to intimidate visiting teams and remind Liverpool players of the club's standard. The sign remained in the tunnel through the club’s first two European Cup victories in 1977 and 1978. It was later given to former club youth player Ronald Wilson and remained with his family for decades, displayed in their hotel and a private office until early 2026. The identity of the buyer who acquired the piece at the auction remains undisclosed.
