Outside interference steals spotlight at AAA's Noche de Los Grandes

With enforcement (read: the ref) out of the way, a heel would strike the babyface like they were knocking over a bank before quickly vanishing. It was an in-and-out job that often saw the bad guys make a successful score. Today, the goal is still the same: screw the hero. But how we get there has become absurd. What once was a smash-and-go has become a chorus line of chaos that’s more can-can number than heist. And yet, it’s pretty awesome. Last Saturday at AAA’s Noche de Los Grandes, fans saw a series of run-ins during the critically acclaimed Mask vs. Mask showdown between Grande Americanos. Out came Los Credos, followed by Los Americanos and a daring balcony dive by Bravo Americano. A masked mariachi dropped the Original Grande with a guitar shot. Fans roared when the mysterious musician unmasked, revealing a vengeful Pimpinela Escarlata. Andrea Bazarte, girlfriend of El Grande Americano, showed up and rallied fans behind her man while standing up to the OG as he tried to intimidate her. Though it wasn’t nearly as exciting or large-scale, a similar scene played out the next day at Clash In Italy. Jade Cargill’s cronies came to bail her out, Charlotte Flair made a dramatic save, and the hero, Rhea Ripley, prevailed. Still, the gold standard remains 2024’s Bloodline Rules at WrestleMania XL, where this craze seemingly kicked off. Cody Rhodes faced Roman Reigns in a no-holds-barred affair designed to feature interference. A series of superstar face-offs featuring the Usos, Solo Sikoa, John Cena, The Rock, and The Undertaker stole the show before a hobbled Seth Rollins provided Rhodes the opening he needed to win the Undisputed Universal Championship. Nine months later, another interlude of interference took center stage, highlighted by Rhodes rescuing his rival as Reigns defeated Sikoa in Tribal Combat to remain Tribal Chief. Make no mistake about it: it’s an absurd spectacle. It requires the referee to either look feckless or be rendered disabled for several minutes at a time as all hell breaks loose, with no one stepping in to rein in the madness. Though it’s become an instant trope, fans go gaga every time, the main stars catch their breath, and a supporting cast gets a moment to shine. Ridiculous? Yes. But with the right stars and stories, the pop it gets is worth all the gold in Fort Knox.
