Owen McCown leads UTSA to 45-16 win over UTRGV in season opener

UTSA opened its 2026 football season with a 45-16 victory against UTRGV at the Alamodome on September 5. Quarterback Owen McCown completed 22 of 27 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns, moving with ease after recovering from an offseason sports hernia surgery. The Roadrunners totaled 525 yards of offense, including a 75-yard touchdown run from Will Henderson and a 62-yard screen pass reception by DJ Allen. While head coach Jeff Traylor praised the overall offensive output, he noted the team remained inconsistent with 11 penalties for 115 yards during the performance. This debut served as the first look at the team's retooled attack under new offensive coordinator Rick Bowie.
