Pahokee football community honors memory of Alphonso Smith Jr

Members of the Pahokee high school football program honored the late Alphonso Smith Jr. following their game against Benjamin on September 3. Smith, a former Pahokee player and head coach, died by suicide on September 2 at age 40. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office confirmed the cause of death. Players and staff paid tribute to his influence on the local youth and the football organization during a postgame ceremony. Smith was a former NFL defensive back who played for the Denver Broncos and Detroit Lions after a collegiate career at Wake Forest. Despite a history of legal issues, he remained active in the Pahokee youth sports community. Pahokee players dedicated their season to his memory.
