Paul Vaughan announces retirement from professional rugby league

York Knights prop Paul Vaughan has confirmed he will retire from professional rugby league at the conclusion of the 2026 season. The 35-year-old Australian, a former international for Italy and Australia, joined the Knights this year after completing a three-year stint with the Warrington Wolves. Since his professional debut in 2013 with the Canberra Raiders, he has played for St George Illawarra, the Canterbury Bulldogs, and spent time as a New South Wales representative in State of Origin. Vaughan has appeared 25 times for York this season, contributing seven tries to a squad currently positioned 10th in the Super League. His final professional appearance is scheduled for Thursday against the Bradford Bulls at the LNER Community Stadium. Head coach Mark Applegarth credited the forward for his leadership and impact on the team throughout the current campaign.
