Pearl-Cohn football staff relies on former players to maintain team culture

Pearl-Cohn high school football maintains its program standards by employing a coaching staff comprised largely of former players. Nine of coach Tony Brunetti’s eleven assistants previously played for the team, helping to bridge the generational gap with current student-athletes. The coaching staff, including defensive coordinator Andre Davis and co-offensive coordinator Jimmy Ferrell, focuses on mentorship and providing guidance for players facing off-field challenges similar to those they once encountered. This internal hiring strategy aims to preserve the program's long-term identity and foster deeper connections with the student population. Pearl-Cohn, which holds a 1-1 record in the current season, secured an 18-13 victory over CPA on Aug. 27. The Firebirds have achieved five consecutive seasons with at least 10 wins, including a Class 4A state championship in 2023.
