Pirates rookie Konnor Griffin begins rehab assignment with Altoona

Konnor Griffin, the rookie shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates, starts a rehab assignment with Double-A Altoona on Sunday. Griffin, 20, is recovering from a left ring finger injury sustained on July 5 while playing against the Nationals. He was initially placed on the 10-day injured list before being moved to the 60-day IL. Griffin has played 59 games this season, maintaining a batting average of.276 with five home runs and 20 stolen bases. Jared Triolo and Jacob Gonzalez have filled in at shortstop during his absence. Griffin is eligible to return to the active roster on Friday.
