Pittsburgh Pirates activate Konnor Griffin and designate Christian Bethancourt for assignment

The Pittsburgh Pirates activated shortstop Konnor Griffin from the 60-day injured list on September 4, 2026. To clear a spot for his return, the team designated catcher Christian Bethancourt for assignment. Bethancourt was acquired from the New York Yankees in mid-August but did not appear in any games for the Pirates. Griffin returns after missing nearly three months due to a finger issue sustained on June 5. Additionally, the team recalled Isaac Mattson to the major league roster and optioned Brandon Eisert to Triple-A. The Pirates currently trail the Arizona Diamondbacks by 5.0 games in the National League Wild Card race.
