Pittsburgh Pirates promote Christian Bethancourt to MLB roster

The Pittsburgh Pirates promoted catcher Christian Bethancourt to the major league roster on September 1, 2026. This move follows hip surgery performed on Endy Rodriguez, which created a need for depth at the position. The Pirates acquired Bethancourt from the New York Yankees in a trade during mid-August. The 34-year-old has 427 games of major league experience and spent this year playing at the Triple-A level for both the Chicago Cubs and the Yankees. In addition to the roster change at catcher, the team recalled left-handed pitcher Brandon Eisert from Triple-A Indianapolis. The team currently carries three catchers, including Henry Davis and Rafael Flores Jr., as they adjust to the change in their active lineup.
