The Pittsburgh Pirates signed free agent catcher José Herrera to a minor league contract on September 1. Following the signing, the organization assigned Herrera to the Indianapolis Indians, their Triple-A affiliate. Herrera, 29, spent the 2026 season with the Texas Rangers' organization before his release on July 17. He subsequently joined the Charros de Jalisco in the Mexican League but was released on Monday, clearing the way for his move to Pittsburgh. During his major league career from 2022 to 2025 with the Arizona Diamondbacks, the switch-hitting catcher recorded a.200 batting average with three home runs and 42 RBI across 190 appearances.
