Premier League announces referees for Matchweek 1 of 2026/27 season
Summary

The Premier League has announced the referees for Matchweek 1 of the 2026/27 season, with a focus on maintaining match flow and reducing delays. Key changes include a five-second countdown for time-wasting during throw-ins and goal-kicks. Additionally, substituted players must leave the pitch within ten seconds. A new trial will address goalkeeper injuries, requiring a designated outfield player to leave the field for at least one minute after a stoppage. The league aims for more efficient decision-making, aided by improved VAR technology that can now review specific second-yellow-card situations.
