Purpose-built stadiums drive revenue for NWSL and women’s sports clubs

A report by Populous and Project Level indicates that purpose-built, team-owned stadiums can generate between $1 billion and $3.8 billion in cumulative incremental revenue for women’s sports organizations over three decades. The findings highlight the Kansas City Current and their home venue, CPKC Stadium, as a primary case study. Following the opening of the stadium, the club saw revenues increase from $10.1 million in 2023 to $42.9 million by 2025. League officials have identified infrastructure as a primary hurdle for growth, leading expansion teams like Denver Summit and Boston Legacy to prioritize venue construction for their own development. Beyond gate receipts, the report notes that venue ownership allows clubs to improve media rights negotiations and secure additional sponsorship deals. Multiple teams across the NWSL and abroad are now working to develop dedicated home grounds to capture these long-term financial benefits.
