Quinten Joyner and Jamond Mathis provide impact for Texas Tech in season opener

Texas Tech running back Quinten Joyner recorded his first touchdown for the Red Raiders following his recovery from a torn ACL that kept him sidelined throughout the 2025 season. Joyner finished the game with 43 yards on 10 carries as part of a committee-based rushing attack that totaled 39 carries. Head coach Joey McGuire utilized a three-back rotation alongside J'Koby Williams and Cameron Dickey to address persistent red zone difficulties. Defensively, Jamond Mathis replaced injured starters Trey White and LaDamion Guyton at outside linebacker. Mathis registered a team-high six tackles and 2.5 sacks in his debut performance with the program. The coaching staff indicated that player contributions during current injuries will dictate future playing time opportunities for the roster.
