Raiders' QB Fernando Mendoza ranks as top backup option ahead of 2026 season

Las Vegas Raiders rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza is positioned as a top backup entering the 2026 NFL season. Selected with the first overall pick in the draft, Mendoza will backup veteran Kirk Cousins, who is in his fifteenth NFL season. Analysts have praised Mendoza's potential, noting his impressive college performance, including 3,535 passing yards and 41 touchdowns during his final season at Indiana. While Mendoza could soon see playing time if Cousins struggles, he is expected to take time to develop his skills. The Raiders' offense has been bolstered, but concerns remain about their wide receiver group.
