Real Madrid earns late victory over Espanyol in La Liga opener
Summary

Real Madrid began the 2026-27 La Liga season with a late win against Espanyol, featuring goals from Jude Bellingham and Carlos Espi. Manager Jose Mourinho's midfield selection was closely observed, especially with Bernardo Silva starting alongside Federico Valverde, while Aurelien Tchouameni, recovering from injury, faces heightened competition. Journalist Tomas Roncero noted that Tchouameni may no longer hold an 'untouchable' status in the midfield as options increase, particularly since Madrid missed out on Rodri. Mourinho must now navigate varying combinations based on opponents.
