The Boston Red Sox traded rookie lefty Connelly Early to the Washington Nationals for infielder Curtis Mead on July 26, 2026. Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow stated the team aimed to enhance its offense, having struggled with a.392 slugging percentage. With the trade deadline approaching, Breslow described the decision as uncomfortable but necessary to balance the roster, as Early had been performing well. The Nationals' president Paul Toboni confirmed the team was surprised by Boston's aggressive bid given Mead's long-term control through 2030. Breslow emphasized the importance of supporting the current roster amidst their recent success, winning 16 of 18 games.
