Rutgers field hockey splits weekend matches against Virginia and Syracuse

Rutgers split its weekend games in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, posting a 2-1 loss against Virginia on Friday followed by a 2-1 shootout win over Syracuse on Sunday. Against No. 5 Virginia, Rutgers conceded two second-quarter goals and could only respond with a late strike from Laura Loycke. Sunday’s match against No. 12 Syracuse featured a more disciplined defensive performance, despite Rutgers spending portions of the fourth quarter playing with nine field players due to card suspensions. Olivia Fraticelli equalized for the Scarlet Knights at 55:13 following an overhead pass from Frederique Vernooij to force the shootout. Rutgers now holds a 2-2 record after hosting the two ranked opponents at the Bauer Complex. The team continues its schedule with a match against No. 2 Princeton this coming Friday.
