Sacramento State joins the MAC as a football-only member

Sacramento State officially joined the Mid-American Conference as a football-only member on July 1. This transition marks the program's move into the Football Bowl Subdivision level after ending a 29-year tenure in the Big Sky Conference. The university continues to house 16 of its 21 other athletic programs in the Big West. In their first conference game as a MAC member on August 29, the Hornets suffered a 28-17 loss against Eastern Michigan. Head coach Alonzo Carter is entering his second season leading the team, which previously secured conference titles in 2019, 2021, and 2022. Sacramento State will next host Mississippi Valley State on September 5.
