Saints defensive coordinator Brandon Staley prepares for Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs is the primary focus for New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Brandon Staley ahead of the Week 1 game this Sunday. Staley characterized the running back as a dangerous weapon capable of making plays in both the rushing and passing attacks. The defensive coordinator acknowledged that defending against the player's quickness and top speed creates significant challenges for the Saints' secondary and front seven. Staley often employs light boxes and shifting coverages, but he indicated those tactics may be difficult to maintain when accounting for the versatility of the Lions' star. Gibbs, who enters his fourth season, previously recorded 60 rushing yards in a 2023 victory against the Saints at Caesars Superdome. The upcoming matchup represents the second time in his career that the running back has faced the New Orleans defense.
