Saints sign tight end Stone Smartt to the practice squad

The New Orleans Saints added fourth-year veteran tight end Stone Smartt to their practice squad following NFL roster cutdowns this week. Smartt, an undrafted free agent out of Old Dominion who previously spent time with the Los Angeles Chargers, New York Jets, and Philadelphia Eagles, joins Treyton Welch on the New Orleans practice squad. The 27-year-old transitioned from quarterback to wide receiver and tight end during his collegiate career. While the team already maintains a tight end rotation including Juwan Johnson, Noah Fant, and Oscar Delp, Smartt offers potential depth and special teams experience. He has logged 445 snaps on special teams over the past three seasons. The Saints coaching staff, including head coach Kellen Moore and defensive coordinator Brandon Staley, have prior experience with Smartt from their time in Los Angeles.
