San Diego Padres promote catching prospect Ethan Salas to major league roster

The San Diego Padres selected the contract of 20-year-old catcher Ethan Salas from Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday. Salas, the organization's top-ranked prospect, joins the major league club after appearing in 24 games at the Triple-A level where he maintained a.326 batting average. If he appears in a game, he will become the youngest active player in the major leagues and the youngest catcher to debut since Ivan Rodriguez in 1991. The promotion follows a season where Salas split time between Double-A and Triple-A while recovering from a 2025 back injury. In a corresponding move on Tuesday, the team recalled right-hander Jhony Brito from Triple-A and moved infielder-outfielder Luis Rengifo to the 60-day injured list. The Padres currently hold a slim lead for the third National League wild-card position as they continue a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park.
